Meet the 2024 Winner: Dennis C. Stokes, MD, MPH
Dr. Dennis Stokes is currently Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He received his MD from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1973 and did his pediatric training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received his pediatric pulmonary training at the Children’s Hospital Boston and then joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins after serving as Chief Resident for the Harriet Lane pediatric service. In 1982 he moved to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as director of the Cardiopulmonary service and ICU and in 1990 moved to Vanderbilt as clinical director of the newly formed Pulmonary division, where he also served as CF Center director. He later worked as Professor of Pediatrics at Riley Children’s Hospital/Indiana University and the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD), where he completed his MPH. He returned to Tennessee in 2007 as Division Director at UT/Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and was later named St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee. He retired from UT in 2017 and rejoined Vanderbilt in 2018. He has held numerous leadership positions at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) including chair of the Pediatric Assembly and served on the executive committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine. His primary clinical research interests have included pulmonary complications of childhood cancer therapy, clinical research in cystic fibrosis (CF) and quality improvement efforts in cystic fibrosis and asthma.
Description:
The Assembly on Pediatrics will be presenting its Lifetime Contributions to the Pediatric Respiratory Medicine Award. This award is given to a candidate at the Professor or Professor Emeritus level who is recognized for achievement in teaching, clinical care, research, advocacy, or scholarship over the course of their entire career. The individual should be known for dedicating their life to the advancement of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine. This award will honor the individual’s contributions which significantly enhanced child lung health. Candidates in Pediatric Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Neonatal Medicine will be considered.
Criteria:
- The nominee is a member of the ATS.
- One letter of support outlining the candidate’s contributions to the science, education, practice, and/or advocacy in Pediatric Respiratory Medicine. There may be co-signatories, but only one letter will be accepted.
- The nominee’s curriculum vitae.
- Copies of 3 seminal manuscripts published by the candidate (please consolidate manuscripts into one document before uploading).
- Candidates with more than 25 years of active participation in the specialty, and those with active contributions to the Pediatric Assembly, the ATS, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, or similar institutions, will be viewed favorably.
