A five-year, renewable inclusion term in the ATS Pulmonary Function Laboratory Registry is offered to laboratories along with the purchase of the ATS Pulmonary Function Laboratory Management and Procedure Manual 3rd edition.

The ATS Pulmonary Function Laboratory Registry is an inclusion and acknowledgment program that accepts U.S. and international pulmonary function laboratories that have made the commitment to follow and maintain established ATS/ERS standards for pulmonary function testing and follow the management steps and procedures as outlined in the ATS Pulmonary Function Laboratory Management and Procedure Manual.

To be included in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory Registry a laboratory must first complete an online ATS Pulmonary Function Laboratory Registry application and self-report on laboratory operations and commitment to ATS/ERS testing standards.

Laboratories submitting a completed application accepted by the ATS will be included in the ATS Pulmonary Function Laboratory Registry for a five-year renewable term and will be issued a certificate* acknowledging their inclusion in the Registry.

At the present time, pulmonary function laboratories in the U.S. have no national accreditation requirements.  Unlike other laboratories accredited by government or professional groups, pulmonary function laboratories are thus often subjected to arbitrary local or institutional standards that may not be appropriate.

The American Thoracic Society, the largest pulmonary organization in North America, has taken steps to address that disparity by offering pulmonary function laboratories a manual and inclusion into a registry that acknowledges the importance of following and maintaining established standards in pulmonary function testing.
