An ATS survey of 205 pulmonologists and fellows was conducted in 2016 to determine physician knowledge, attitudes, and practices of COPD management, with particular attention on the use of hand-held small volume nebulizers (SVN). The survey was designed by an ATS steering committee including ATS clinicians and scientists and conducted by Harris Poll in January, 2016.
A companion survey of 254 patients was conducted in March 2016. That survey showed large gaps in physician/patient communication.
The surveys, taken together, uncover gaps in patient knowledge and understanding about inhalation devices, areas that pulmonologists seek to improve their own knowledge, and opportunities to improve the physician -patient interaction.
