Medical Education Research Grant Programs

The Medical Education Research Grant Programs reflect the ATS Board of Directors’ commitment to developing outstanding educators in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. The programs support the design, implementation, and evaluation of novel educational approaches for biomedical health professional trainees, students, or patients.

Medical Education Research Grant

One grant available - $5,000/one year

The goal of the Medical Education Research Grant from the Section on Medical Education (SoME) is to provide junior faculty career educators the opportunity to perform high quality research that advances the fields of education in pulmonary, critical care, or sleep medicine. 

Target Audience

Early-career medical educators planning scholarly work in medical education for undergraduate or graduate health care professionals. As this is a junior investigator award, it is strongly recommended to include a mentor on the proposal. ATS accepts submission from international researchers unless otherwise specified.

Preference will be given to projects that: include a mentor and mentoring plan; are multi-institutional; and go beyond simple curriculum development.

Applicants may request up to $5,000 for one year for salaries, statistical support/consultations, equipment, and supplies. Travel expenses and indirect costs are not allowed. Salary expenses must be for necessary project personnel other than the applicant. Presentation is expected at an ATS International Conference within two years of completion.

Eligibility

  • The Medical Education Research Award from the SoME defines Junior Investigator as:
    • An Instructor or Assistant Professor (or equivalent rank) at the time the grant is submitted (priority will be given to applicants who are ≤ 7 years from completion of PhD or fellowship training)
    • Exceptions will be considered when extenuating circumstances (such as parental leave) exist. Please send an explanation to Morgan Soffler before submitting an application.
  • At the time of application:
    • At least one key personnel must be an ATS member
    • At least one key personnel must be a SoME member
  • By the time the grant is awarded:
    • The principal investigator must be a full ATS member
    • The PI must be a SoME member
    • Any co-investigators who are ATS members must be SoME members.

  • Background
    • Demonstrates adequate review of relevant literature and importance of proposed study
  • Scholarly Contributions in Medical Education
    • Methods are appropriate to the research question and validated tools are used when available
  • Educational Impact and/or Innovation
    • Novel and applicable beyond the applicant’s institution
  • Educational Leadership and Support (local or national)
    • Evidence of support for the project at the Divisional/Departmental level, including other resources that will be necessary to complete the project
  • Project Feasibility
    • 1 year timeline for completion with a feasible budget

The ATS-APCCMPD Joint Medical Education Research Grant

One grant available - $10,000/one year

The purpose of the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD) is to facilitate education and excellence in clinical and research training in adult pulmonary and critical care medicine, provide a vehicle for communication among all training program directors and various organizations that deal with the training of pulmonologists and critical care medicine specialists, and monitor and respond to developments in training, accreditation, credentialing, workforce, financing, and other issues affecting programs in pulmonary and/or critical care medicine.

Medical Education Research Award Opportunity

The goal of the ATS-APCCMPD Joint Medical Education Research Grant is to provide faculty the opportunity to investigate graduate medical education topics that will support the development of future physician-scientists in adult pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Proposals may cover any aspect of graduate medical education; suggested topics include but are not limited to:

  • Identify and validate processes for assessing the competency of physician-scientist trainees in the fields of pulmonary, critical care, and pulmonary critical care medicine
  • Validation of novel training methods or training effectiveness for physician-scientist trainees in the fields of pulmonary, critical care, and pulmonary critical care medicine
  • Discover new techniques and strategies that enable the transformation of medical education into innovative research that enhances the understanding and progress of pulmonary, critical care, and pulmonary critical care medicine
  • Identify the relationship between organizational change and medical education and how it impacts basic research
  • Identify/create new tools or methods that make GME and training programs for physician-scientists easier and more efficient

Target Audience

Medical educators at any stage planning scholarly work that will benefit the training of physician-scientists in adult pulmonary and/or critical care graduate medical education.

Applicants may request up to $10,000 for one year for direct research costs including: salaries relating to statistical support/consultations, equipment, and supplies. Travel expenses and indirect costs are not allowedSalary expenses must be for necessary project personnel other than the applicant. Presentation is expected at an ATS International Conference within two years of completion. 

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be licensed physicians. Physicians-in-training (fellows), junior faculty within five years of program completion, associate program directors, or program directors with relevant experience will also be accepted.
    • Although applicants may be at later career stages, special consideration will be given to junior faculty, trainees, and applicants in the early stages of their careers.
    • If the applicant is a fellow-in-training or associate program director, a program director should sponsor the project, and a formal mentor should be identified. The formal mentor and program director may be the same individual.
  • Teams are encouraged to apply but must have a representative to serve as the Principal Investigator who will apply as an individual and receive recognition if awarded.
    • The principal investigator must be both an ATS and APCCMPD member at the time of application.
  • IRB approval (if applicable) must be acquired no later than 3 months after receiving the grant award.

  • Applications may be submitted by members of pulmonary-critical care, pulmonary, or critical care programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME-accredited program must acknowledge and agree to the terms of the applicant’s application.

  • Not-for-profit organizations and institutions are eligible to apply.

    • Early-career investigators should request a letter from a supervisor or mentor.
    • Later-career investigators should request a letter from a senior staff member to whom they report.
    • Note: Current members of the American Thoracic Society Board of Directors or the APCCMPD Board of Directors are not permitted to write letters of support.
  • Human Subjects Involvement
    • IRB status: IRB approval must be acquired (if applicable) no later than three months after receiving the grant award.
    • The ATS may rescind the award if the grantee does not receive IRB approval within three months of the award.
