LGBTQIA+ Interest Group

Co-Chairs: James M. Beck, MD, VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, Denver, CO and Dona J. Upson, MD, MA, New Mexico VA Health Care System, Albuquerque, NM.

LGBTQIA+ Interest Group Objectives:

The goal of the LGBTQIA+ Interest GroupInterest Group is to create a forum within the ATS membership that will address the medical and social needs of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + Allies (LGBTQ+), community and their allies in relation to the work of the ATS.

Selected issues of note that could be addressed by this Interest Group include:

  • The significantly higher number of LGBTQIA+ Interest Group people who use tobacco
  • Issues of access to care
  • Visitation rights to patients by their life partners in hospital and clinic settings
  • Negotiating fellowships/practice groups, etc.

The LGBTQIA+ Interest Group was formed in 2010 to recognize the LGBTQ+ community within the ATS.  The group meets annually at the ATS International Conference with a social gathering which allows members to network and interact in an informal and open environment.  We hope this affords junior members an opportunity for mentorship and advice while facilitating potential collaborations amongst all in the group.

If you would like to join our interest group or have an idea you wish to have the group consider, please email your information to the Assembly Department at atsassembly@thoracic.org. We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to the group!
