William Checkley, MD

William Checkley, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and holds joint appointments in International Health and Biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He obtained his MD degree from Northwestern University, Internal Medicine residency from Emory University, Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship and PhD degree from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Checkley is currently Director of the Center for Global Non-Communicable Disease Research and Training at Johns Hopkins University and Director of the Fogarty Global Health Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, and teaches the “Chronic Disease in Low- and Middle-Income Countries” Summer Institute Course at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Checkley’s research has focused on characterizing the prevalence of COPD and associated risk factors and biomarkers in low- and middle-income countries. Specifically, he is leading observational studies on the association between biomass fuel smoke exposure and lung function, and intervention trials of improved cookstoves to reduce biomass fuel smoke exposure and improve pulmonary outcomes. Dr. Checkley has been involved in NIH-sponsored networks of Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases including the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute sponsored Global Health Initiative, and the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases; and, is Principal Investigator in two household air pollution intervention trials using liquefied propane gas stoves and fuel distribution as an approach to mitigate pollution exposure and improve health. He also is a practicing intensivist at the Medical Intensive Care Unit of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and is involved in the design and conduct of critical care observational studies and randomized controlled trials.

 

Dr. Checkley has authored 266 publications in peer-reviewed journals (6000 overall citations with an h-index of 38 as reported by Clarivate Analytics Web of Science 8/4/20); is a member of the editorial board of six medical journals; and, serves as a frequent peer reviewer in several high-impact journals in medicine and public health.
